貧困家庭で育った子どもはこのワーキングメモリーが弱いという。そのため学習能力も低く学校での成績も悪くなり、学歴も劣ることになる。そうして成人になっても貧困にとどまることになってしまうのだ。しかしなぜワーキングメモリーの機能が低下するのか。ストレスが原因らしい。貧困に陥っている人は、経済的な理由と言うよりも社会のヒエラルキーの中で底辺に属しているという理由でストレスを感じるらしく、子どもの脳にはこのストレスが大きな悪影響を与えるというから恐ろしい。
